Located underground, the Middle City is actually quite larger than the Proper. Legend has it that when Tamez was just a small village with a well, invaders from the then-young Widao threatened what was at the time the city-state of Tamaz. An Earthspeaker named Sowih -- believed to be an ancestor of Jalen d'Avrin en Mosai -- created a vast network of underground tunnels and caves to hide the people while Tamez's warrior fought above. Whether or not that is true is debateable, but over the years Sowih's havens eventually evolved and grew into the complex city it is today.
Everything necessary for a bustling metropolis to survive can be found in the Middle City, and its infrastructure is near flawless over centuries of continuos fine-tuning. Air is circulated using heavily fortified air ducts that tower out of the ground, using large fans to channel air in and out of the City. Electricity is delivered using a lace of cables beneath the city, some of them being as thick as twelve men alltogether. All of the city is lighted by the ceilings overhead. To add an illusion of being outside, the above ground weather conditions are often simulated on the great panels of ceiling, and nighttime and daytime are also produced by the dimming and growing of lights.
A few outsiders live, work and wander about the Middle City, but most of them are lifetime residents. It is difficult for anyone who is not native to Delaam to enter the Middle City due to heightened restrictions because of the war.
Below the Middle City is the Citadel, where few are allowed to tread.
